unit 1 anatomy Flashcards
adrenal glands
releases hormones
alveoli
small air spaces in the lungs
red blood cells
carry oxygen from lungs to tissues
takes CO2 back to lungs
white blood cells
help body fight infections and other diseases
arteries
carry blood away from the heart
veins
carry blood toward the heart
bone marrow
RED: forms all blood cells (except lymphocytes), YELLOW: storehouse for fats
brain
thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor, vision, etc.
bronchi
main air passages to the lungs
diaphragm
thin sheet of muscle separating the chest from the abdomen
epiglottis
covers the windpipe to direct food towards stomach
esophagus
tube used to swallow (between back of throat and stomach)
gall bladder
sac that stores, concentrates bile
heart
pumps blood
kidneys
maintains water balance
expels metabolic wastes
large intestine (colon)
lubricates waste, absorbs remaining fluids/salts, stores waste
larynx
produces vocal sounds and prevents passage of food and other foreign particles
liver
removes waste/toxic matter from blood, destroys old red blood cells
secretes bile, metabolizes proteins/carbs/fats, stores glycogen/vitamins/others, synthesizes blood-clotting, regulates blood volume
lymph nodes
filters for blood, providing tissue where foreign antigens can be trapped/exposed to cells
lungs
take oxygen from environment, transfer to bloodstream
pancreas
releases hormones to regulate blood sugar
discharges digestive enzymes (insulin, glucagon)
salivary glands
lubricate your mouth, help swallow, aid in digestion, protect teeth
skin/sweat glands
provides protection, receives sensory stimuli, regulates body temp.
small intestine
where most digestion/absorption of food takes place (extending from stomach to large intestine)
spinal cord
mediate reflex actions, transmit impulses to/from brain
spleen
primary blood filter, storing/releasing immune cells (tissue inflammation)
stomach
a temp. receptacle for storage+distribution of food
some chem. processes of digestion
testes and ovaries
releases hormones
thyroid gland
releases hormones
trachea
windpipe, conveys air from larynx to two main bronchi and then to air sacs
urinary bladder
organ for temp. strorage of urine from kidneys
urethra
duct that transmits urine from bladder to outside of body
uvula
secretes saliva and keep food/fluid from nose (hangs from post. of soft palate)
