Unit 1 Airplanes And Aerodynamics Flashcards
What are the four forces of flight?
-Lift
-Weight
-Thrust
-Drag
What are the 3 axes of rotation?
-longitudinal (roll)
-vertical (yaw)
-lateral (pitch)
What are primary flight controls?
-elevator
-ailerons
-rudder
What are secondary flight controls?
-Trim Devices
-Wing Flaps
-spoilers
-leading edge devices
Trim devices definition
Used to relieve you of the need to maintain continuous pressure on the primary controls surfaces.
What is aerodynamics?
Forces acting on an airplane while in flight.
What is an airfoil?
An airplane wing or propeller blade
Airfoils are critical for generating lift in aviation.
What is camber in relation to an airfoil?
The curvature of the airfoil wing
Camber affects the lift and drag characteristics of the wing.
What is the leading edge?
Normally rounded
The leading edge is the front part of an airfoil or wing that first contacts the airflow.
What is the trailing edge?
Normally tapered and narrow
The trailing edge is the rear part of an airfoil or wing that allows the airflow to reattach.
What is relative wind?
The direction of the airflow produced by an object moving through the air
Relative wind is crucial in aerodynamics as it affects lift and drag on an aircraft.
What is Wingspan?
The maximum distance from wingtip to wingtip
Wingspan is a critical measurement in aviation and ornithology, affecting flight dynamics and performance.
What is the fuselage?
The main component of the airplane that houses the crew, cargo, instruments, etc.
What are ailerons?
they are located on the rear of each wing, near the wingtips & move in opposite directions. If one is Up, the other is down.
They are used to control roll.
What are wing flaps?
they are located inboard on the wing and move together. They both extend downward,or retract upward, in unison
