Unit 1 Flashcards
astronomy
a combination of a number of scientific disciplines that attempt to understand the universe and the objects in it
heliocentric
the idea that the planets, including the Earth, revolve around the Sun
geocentric
the idea that the planets and the Sun revolve around the Earth
science
the body of knowledge and a method of how we learned that knowledge
Kepler’s First Law
The orbit of a planet about the Sun is an ellipse with the sun at one focus.
Kepler’s Second Law
A line joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time.
Kepler’s Third Law
The square of a planet’s sidereal period around the Sun is directly proportional to the cube of the length of its orbit’s semi-major axis.
gravity
the force of attraction between all objects that have mass
Newton’s First Law of Motion
an object will move at the same velocity unless an outside force acts upon it
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
the force acting on an object is equal to the object’s mass times the acceleration it undergoes
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
scientific notation
mathematical expression used to represent a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by ten, so you can write large numbers using less digits
