Unit 1 Flashcards
What is the periodic table?
The periodic table is the arrangement of all atoms in existence.
How is the periodic table constructed?
Elements are ordered from low atomic weight to high atomic weight across the rows, and are arranged by similar physical properties by columns.
What is the charge of an electron
An electron is negatively charged and has a relative mass of 1/1836
What is the charge of a proton
A proton is positively charged and has a relative mass of 1
What is the charge of a neutron
A neutron has no charge and has a relative mass of 1
The overall charge of an atom is … meaning that there is an equal amount of … and …
neutral, protons and electrons
The amount of … determines what kind of element
Protons
The atomic number is the amount of …
Protons
The mass number is the number of … and …
Protons and neutrons
Isotopes are…
atoms with the same number of protons and a different amount of neutons.
When an atom loses an electron it is called a … and has a … charge.
cation, positive
When an atom gains an electron it is called a … and has a … charge.
anion, negative
Describe Dalton’s / Democritus’ atomic model
Democritus and Dalton proposed the solid ball model, where each atom was a singular, neutral, indivisible unit
Describe JJ Thomson’s atomic model
J.J. Thomson proposed the Plum Pudding model, where the atom was a positive shell, containing negative electrons giving the atom an overall negative charge.
Desbribe Rutherford’s atomic model
Rutherford proposed that the atom was mostly empty space, consisting of the nucleus (positive) that was orbited by electrons.
