Unit 1 Flashcards
Define the term system. (1)
An object or group of objects
Energy is transferred from the chemical store of the battery to the thermal store of the bulb. State how this energy is transferred between the 2 stores.(1)
Work is being done by the current in the circuit
Describe the energy transfers that occur when a liquid is heated using a power supply and immersion heater. (4)
The current flowing through the immersion heater does work, transferring energy electrically to the thermal store of the heater. it is then transferred from the thermal store of the heater to the thermal store of the liquid.
Describe what is meant by wasted energy. (1)
Energy transferred to a less useful store.
A car goes to the garage and gets a new engine that has a higher power. how will the new engine affect the time it takes for the car to accelerate. (3)
It will decrease the time to accelerate because more energy is being transferred to the kinetic store so the car speeds up more quickly
What is convection? (1)
Where a change in DENSITY causes particles to move from hotter regions to colder regions
Describe in terms of particles, the energy transfers that take place within a block as it is heated. (3)
Thermal energy is transferred to the kinetic store of energy at the bottom of the block. These particles collide with other particles in the block and transfer energy mechanically to the kinetic energy stores of the particles. This continues, transferring energy throughout the whole block.
A student raised a bucket from a well. After lubricating the axle, he noticed that it took less long. I know its very exciting but explain why.
Before lubrication, there was a high frictional force on the axle. After lubricating it, the frictional forces were reduced. this means that less energy was wasted on the frictional forces so it was turned into kinetic energy which moved the bucket up from the well faster.
Give 4 everyday uses for fossil fuels.
generating electricity using coal
central heating with gas
burning coal on fires
using oil in cars
What are bio fuels?
Solids, liquids or gasses that are produced from plant product or animal waste
Is nuclear power a fossil fuel?
noooooooooo
What are some reasons the UK is using more renewable energy.
- We understand more about the negative effects on the environment
- fossil fuels will run out so companies are looking for alternatives
- pressure from the public has led to governments setting targets which can lead to increases spending
What are some factors that limit the use of renewable energy resources.
building new power plants costs money
they are often less reliable than fossil fuels
Personal products like hybrid cars are often more expensive
research into renewables takes time and money which some governments are not willing to spend
