Unit 1 Flashcards
What is an online service?
It is whenever you connect to the internet
What is SMTP?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol(SMTP)- The internet standard used for sending messages across IP networks in server-to-server transfers. Also used by email users to send a message to an email server.
What is POP3?
Post Office Protocol 3 is used to retrieve emails from an email server over a TCP/IP connection. This is the most widely used email retrieval protocol. Normally users download emails to their local computer using POP3, deleting them from the email server.
What is IMAP?
Internet Message Access Protocol- It is the users work on the emails as they reside on the email server using IMAP and do not download them.
Methods of Online Advertising
Search Engines results pages.
Banner and pop-up advertisements.
Email marketing.
What is Pay-per-click advertising?
Pay-per-click advertising is a form of online advertising. It involves or web pages hosting ads for other companies. If a surfer clicks on an ad, they will be re-directed through to the advertiser’s website. The website or web page provider will receive a payment for every ad which is clicked on
Data Storage
Data storage is another type of online service. Many organisations are providing facilities for you to store and back up your data on their computers, and to make files available to share with others. The current term used for online data storage is ‘cloud storage’
Data backup
Data backup is a method of making copies of files. These copies can then be retrieved if disaster recovery is needed.
Definition of Compressed
Files reduced in size to make it quicker to access online.
Definition of Downloaded
You download for local (Your PC) processing (You using)
Definition of Algorithms
Different algorithms do the compression to make the files smaller
Definition of Index
1 file which has the location of all data files in the zip folder to make it back to normal again
Definition of Program Code
(Sequence of Instructions) to allow files to decompress themselves.
What is Packet Switching?
Packet Switching is a mode of data transmission in which a message is broken into a number of parts which are sent independently, over whatever route is optimum/the fastest for each packet and is reassembled at the destination. The packets are composed of a header and a payload.
What is the store and forward system?
The store and forward system is where the sender sends a recipient who is offline and is stored on an email server and waits until the recipient signs in and then the server sends the message to them.
What is File Compression? And some advantages?
File Compression makes files smaller so they take up less space in computer memory. Compression is also known as ‘zipping’ and is done using an algorithm. One file can be compressed or many files can be compressed into one.
- It saves memory space on computers e.g. web server
- Files will upload and download more quickly
- Files will better fit restrictions, such as the attachment limit on email
Advantages of Collaborative Working
- Users do not need to travel to work together; saving money, time and the environment
- Users can work on the same document instead of having different versions of the same file
What is an online community?
Online communities exist in a virtual world. This is an unreal world which is created by the computer and does not exist in the real world. Some communities need to be involved at the same time, such as some online gaming, whereas others can have users interacting at different times such as a forum or VLE.
What is VoIP?
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a method of real-time communication over the internet such as Skype. The data transmitted is audio and video as two computers are connected through their unique IP addresses
What are the advantages and disadvantages of VoIP?
Advantages:
- Able to connect someone anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection.
- Uses internet-only so no additional cost
- Reduces travel costs, travel time and etc.
Disadvantages:
- Relies on internet connection so it can be a slow connection or it can cut out.
- As the audio is being converted to digital, transmitted over the internet and converted back again, the voice quality can be affected.
- Data exchanged over the internet is at risk of security threats such as hackers.
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is where data is saved on external servers instead of the user’s hard drive. The external servers are called hosts and are owned by a hosting company. Some good examples are Dropbox, Microsoft One Drive and Google Cloud. Cloud users can access software, data and storage provided by their hosting company. Users usually access the cloud through a web browser or mobile app, they do not directly access the servers.
What is an RFID chip?
Radio Frequency Identification chips are a way to embed processors into everyday objects. They can be used to identify and track an object. It is similar to a bar code, although it does not need to be scanned.
What is Ubiquitous Computing?
Ubiquitous means ‘existing everywhere’. Ubiquitous computing is where processors are embedded into everyday objects.
What is an ISP?
An ISP or Internet Service Provider allows connection to the internet for a client.
