Dependent Variable
in an experiment, the variable that the experimenter observes as a result of changing the independent variable
Derived Unit
unit of measurement that combines fundamental units to measure a physical property
Energy
the ability, capacity, or capability of a physical system to do work
Fundamental Quantity
that quantity that is measured to understand the physical world: distance, mass, time, and temperature
Fundamental Units
the basic units by which fundamental quantities are measured: meter, gram, second, and degree Celsius
Hypothesis

Independent Variable
in an experiment, the variable that the experimenter changes

anything that occupies space and has mass
Metric System
a decimal system of measurement by which fundamental quantities are measured in fundamental and derived units
Physical Science
the study of matter and energy and their interactions, which includes the disciplines of physics and chemistry
Scientific Method
investigative process that recognizes that scientific concepts and models are only valid if their predictions agree with experimental results
Significant Figure
the way measured numbers are properly reported; expresses an estimate or margin of error in scientific measurement
Variable
in an experiment, a factor that is unknown or can change
Viscosity

Work
amount of energy transferred to or from an object (a body or system) as a result of forces acting upon the object (a body or system), causing displacement of the object
