Globalization
process that making the world’s citizens increasingly interdependent
Interdependence
growing mutual dependence among peoples, socially, politically, and economically
Pluralistic Society
society in which a diversity of languages, beliefs, traditions, values, religions, and other aspects of culture are embedded as part of the foundations of the country ; society that respects and values the individual and collective identities of all people
Individual Identity
traits that make up a person’s sense of individuality
Collective Identity
combination of beliefs, values, view of history, and language of a people
Minority Language
language spoken by a minority of people in a country
Transnationals
corporations that operate in two or more countries
Media Transnational
mass media corporation that produces television programs, films, music books, and so on in two or more countries
Universalizaton
spread of culture, trends, customs, and practices around the world. Results in the disappearance of unique cultures and the development of a universal or world culture
Homogenization
trend towards uniformity, as with world popular cultures as a result of globalization
Hybridization
blending of media and communications technologies resulting in new modes of expression and cross-cultural consumption
Popular Culture
cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people
Private Broadcaster
broadcaster that gets its money from advertising as a result, broadcasts popular culture
Public Broadcaster
broadcaster that is mandated to promote Canadian culture and as a result, often receives funding from the government
Assimilation
absorption of a minority group by a dominant group
Acculturation
change as a result of contact with other cultural groups
Cultural Appropriation
The inclusion and absorption of cultural elements from one (minority) culture into another (dominant) culture
Cultural Revitalization
process through which unique cultures regain a sense of identity
Culture
enduring behaviors, ideas, attitudes, values, and traditions shared by a group of people and transmitted from one generation to the next
Identity
Beliefs, values, hobbies, likes, dislikes, apperance
Cultural Exchange
process by which different cultures share ideas and ways of doing things
Social Globalization
process by which people’s lifestyles- (customs, fashions, art forms, languages, traditions, and social norms) are spread over global networks
Technological Globalization
process of cross-cultural development and exchange of technology
Economic Globalization
increasing integration and interdependence of national economies around the world including an increased interdependence on other countries for goods and services
Environmental Globalization
interactions that have cause international environmental problems and the interdependence of countries to work together to solve those problems
Political Globalization
process by which political decisions and actions are becoming increasingly international. (includes the spread of political ideas and system)
Official Bilingualism
official government policy under which a country or province recognizes two official languages
Bill 101
French the only official language in the Province of Quebec
