Unit 1 Flashcards
A function that, when graphed, goes down from left to right.
Decreasing function
A function with a graph that is unbroken and consists of all points; connected with a solid line. Data where ALL REAL NUMBERS ARE ALLOWED IN THE DOMAIN.
Continuous function
The output variable of a function; the “y” value
Dependent variable
A function with a graph that consists of isolated, individual points; the graph is broke.
Discrete function
The set of all inputs; permissible values for “x”
Domain
A way to name a function using f(x) instead of “y”
F(x) notation
For each input (x), there is exactly one output (y); has a pattern; predicable
Function
A function that, when graphed, goes up from left to right
Increasing function
The input variable of a function;the “x” value
Independent variable
A function where the highest exponent is 1; forms a line when graphed
Linear function
A function where the highest exponent is 2; forms a parabola when graphed
Quadratic Function
The set of all outputs of a function; permissible values for “y”
Range
A pairing of a set of outputs with a set of inputs; situation where ordered pairs can be created.
Relation
Algebraically, table form, graphically, verbally. Also known as four corners
Representations
A letter that can be used to represent a number
Variable
Consists of numbers, variables, and operations. No equal sign
Expression
To solve
Evaluate
To work out to the point where you can’t work it out anymore
Simplify
A fraction that compares two qualities measured in different units
Rate
When the denominator is 1 and both parts of the fraction represent a unit of measurement
Unit rate
An open sentence that contains one of the following symbols
Inequality
The flip version of a fraction
Reciprocal
Same value or same solutions for all values of the variable
Equivalent
Two operations that undo each other
Inverse operation
Property that allows us to group terms together
Associative property
Property that allows us to change the order of numbers. Only used when adding or multiplying
Commutative Property
Property used to remove parenthesis
Distributive property
Use a graph to solve an equation. The intersection of 2 lines.
Graphic solution
Process of isolating the variable in an equation
Solving an equation
Parts of the problem separated by plus or minus signs
