Unit 1&2 - Heat Flashcards
What is the definition of heat?
The transfer of thermal energy from a hotter body to a colder one (J)
What is the definition of temperature?
The average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance
What does latent heat mean when talking about a substance?
The amount of energy required to change the state of the substance.
What is the equation of latent heat?
Energy = mass x specific latent heat
What does specific heat capacity mean when talking about a substance?
The amount of heat energy needed to raise 1kg of a substance by 1’C
Convert 0’C to Kelvin
273K
Convert 373K to Celsius
100’C
What is the main point of conduction and what state(s) does it occur?
Solid & Liquids; the vibrating of particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles.
What is the main point of convection and what state(s) does it occur?
Liquids & Vapours; Hot air rises cold air sinks.
What is the main point of radiation?
Hint: Something to do with colour.
Black surfaces absorb; white surfaces reflect.
What is the cycle of the refrigerator as the coolant travels around?
Evaporator, Compressor, Condenser, Expansion valve. Repeat.
What is thermal equilibrium?
Heat lost = heat gained
When 2 substances are combined and reach the same temperature so that no energy is transferred.
