  2. the person delivering the acknowledgement should make it meaningful and it should contain a personal commitment

  4. use it as recognition and understanding of colonialism and its impacts

What is the mythical “Indian princess” stereotype?

A

It originated from Sacajawea and other native woman scouts who are portrayed as compliant and helpful to US government spies like Lewis and Clark, and to fur traders and explorers. Usually they are the portrayed as daughters of tribal chiefs.

example: Pocahontas is a symbol of Eurocentric values and norms as she leaves her tribe to become Christian = tool of colonialism

A

A

It identifies two categories of status Indians: 6(1) and 6(2), both are full status, there is no half.

What is a 6(1) versus 6(2) Indian?

A

6(1) is a person who has both First Nations parents.
6(2) is a person who has one First Nations parents and one that is not.

However, if a 6(2) Indian marries someone non-Indigenous, their children will not have status. Therefore it only takes two generations to lose your status.

A

In winter: families broke into small groups and went to winter cabins in the forest. This allowed the game in the area to sustain each group. Men hunted while women preserved meat and made clothing etc. This time was also used for telling traditional stories.

A

In summer: they planted gardens and moved back to the summer village. Men fished and hunted while women planted crops, gathered berries and other plants, and everyone visited friends and had ceremonial feasts and dances. Many games like lacrosse were played.
