How do we in text reference?

A

In brackets we put the surname of the author then a comma and the year. For example, The Girl Without a Sound
(Ngaba, 2016) NB when writing the name of a book remember to curve the writing and capitalize the beginning of each word that isn’t an article like “a, of, the, and” unless it’s at the start of the name. Or we could say according to Ngaba (2016), …

How do we intext reference when we’re quoting?

A

In brackets we include the author’s surname year of publication and page number. For example, “ I like the police. They have uniform and you know what they are meant to be doing” (Haddon, 2004, p.7). Or we could say according to Haddon (2004, p.7), NB we only involve page numbers when we’re quoting when there are direct words involved.

How do we write a bibliography?

A

Book:
Author’s surname, Author’s initial(s). (Date of publication). Slanted title. Place of publication: Publisher.
For example, Haddon, M. (2004). The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. London: Vintage.

Academic journals:
Author’s surname , Author’s initial. (Date of publication). Slanted journal title. Volume number(issue number), page range.
For example, Saliba-Salman, H. (2018). Parody or Pastiche in Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Studies in Popular Culture, 40(2), pp. 83-94.

Online articles:
Author’s surname, Author’s initial. (Date). Title of the article. Name of publishing house.URL.

Provide a summary of Room

A

This novel is seen through the perspective of a five-year-old boy named Jack who remains captive with his mother. Jack’s need to be social with others is seen when he personifies non-living things. Ma tries by all means to keep Jack happy and healthy. She does this by limiting Jack’s TV time, having a healthy diet and strict oral and body hygiene. Old Nick is their captor They later escape by pretending that Jack is dead. Old Nick removes Jack and he manages to escape and informs the police. Old Nick is convicted. Life afterwards however becomes difficult as they are unable to transitions into having normal lives because of the media and the trauma they’ve experienced. In the end though they find the courage to say goodbye to Room and move on.

A

The novel is narrated by a fifteen-year-old boy named Christopher who discovers that his neighbors dog has been killed. He sets out to investigate who is the culprit his investigation is aided by his condition which’s Autism. He’s warned by his father and the policeman which arrested him not to investigate. Despite these warnings however, he carries on and discovers that his father and the owner of the dead dog , Mrs. Shears, had an affair while his father was still with his mother. Subsequently Mr. Shears and his mother were also having an affair. Christopher also uncovers the truth about his mother. His mother is actually alive and has been sending letters requesting for Christopher to come over to London. Christopher faints after discovering this . He then sets out to find his mother and moves to London.

Christopher doesn’t respond to social cues or empathise with others we see this in the introduction. Christopher see a dead dog and instead of feeling sad he use logic and concludes that the dog was murdered and this should be investigated. His way of thinking is rational which’s one of the best traits for solving mysteries. He also has the ability to pay attention to detail.

In the novel we’re introduced to a ten-year-old girl named Darling and her friends who paint their lives as vibrant and carefree. Despite their struggles such as hunger, violence and political crisis they still manage to see the silver lining. They do this by getting into trouble such as stealing guava’s from the rich neighbourhoods ,Budapest, which gives them thrill and excitement. The plot thickens when Darling moves to America with her Aunt. Despite living in better conditions Darling struggles with letting go of Paradise which gave her a sense of belonging and friends.

A

In the first few page we learn that this isn’t the conventional story of a princess with blue eyes and blonde hair. The narrator is a young girl who can not speak and has a golden cocoon. Although she remains voiceless she’s still potrayed as special or invaluable. She is visited by a red-winged woman. Together they set out on a mission to find her voice only to discover it was inside of her all along.

A

In the book we encounter Sulwe who’s the dark skinned protagonist. She looks nothing like her family who are light skin. She is teased at her school for how her skin looks in response to this she tries by all means to make herself lighter. On one night she gets a visit from a star who tells her a story about how the world learned to appreciate the value and beauty of the night which’s dark. This and her mother’s talk about how beautiful she is gave Sulwe the self-confidence she needed.

This story focuses on two sisters that are Muslim named Asiya and Faizah. Asiya the older sister is excited to wear her first blue hijab. Faizah the younger sister spends most of her time worrying about her older sister because she’s afraid they might bully her. However, Faizah witnesses her sister turn away from the bullies that commented hurtful things to her. Faizah learns that her sister is unbothered by bullies. She sees her sister wear her hijab with pride and aspires to be like her when she’s older.
