Unit 1 & 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is pavement design and what is the basic objective?

A

The design and construction of road surfaces. The basic objective is to combine materials of sufficient strength in a layered system to provide desired functional and structural service life.

Q

The ability of a pavement to provide acceptable functional and structural levels is referred to as the “supply”. Name the 3 “demand” factors.

A
  1. Traffic environment
  2. Natural environment
  3. Population environment

Q

State the difference between structural stress, terminal structural condition and structural failure.

A

Structural stress - occurs from the day the pavement is open to traffic. Stars small until permanent deformation and fatigue.

Terminal structural condition - it is reached when the level of distress reaches a predefined unacceptable level.

Structural failure - occurs if the pavement layer loses its strength.
