Unit 1 Flashcards
Proposition
A sentence that can be true or false. That is, every sentence that we call a proposition has a truth value.
Argument
A set of propositions, one of which (the conclusion) is claimed to follow from the others (which are called PREMISES)
Deductive Argument
An argument for which we are prepared to make the claim that if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true.
Inductive Argument
An argument for which we are prepared to make the claim that the premises are evidence for the conclusion, though they do not guarantee it.
A Valid Deductive Argument
A deductive argument such that if the premises are true the conclusion MUST be true.
Invalid Deductive Argument
A deductive argument that is not valid; that is, it is a deductive argument such that it is possible that the premises could be true while the conclusion is false.
A sound (deductive) argument
A valid argument with every premise true.
