Explain the significance of the fur trade on development of Canada

A

Wealth and power – drove economic growth, and strengthened by European influence

Cultural exchange – brought European and native people together, sharing knowledge and inter marriage

Expanded in land – expanded land by putting up trading post everywhere and exploring for more materials to trade

Increased population – brought lots of European settlers and traders in, while also creating more population (Métis)

Explain what happened at the battle of the plains of Abraham

A

– battle took place outside Quebec city, during the seven years war
– British went up, steep cliffs at night, taking the French by surprise
– Montcalm gathered troops quick, but British fired powerfully that broke French line
– Both generals were wounded and died, British captured Quebec, led to British control in new France

Explain the significance of the Seigneurial system. What role did the seigneur have? What role did the habitant have?

A

– Was important as it organized the land for farming and helped develop communities. Created structured society where Seigneurs controlled the land and habitant worked on it, in exchange for protection and resources.
-duties of the seigneur were to, subdivide the seignuery, and give land to habitats, build a house and flower mill, construction of church
-duties of the habitats were too, pay taxes/dues to Seigneur, build house and farm the land, give a percentage of their produce to Seigneur annually.

A

– American immigrants were discouraged from coming to British North America
– Stabilized the border between US and British North America
– rush bagot agreement of 1817 demilitarized the Great Lakes
– Britain began to respect US as a separate nature

What is the significance of the act of union of 1841?
This combined upper and lower Canada into just one government with equal representation from Canada, West and Canada East. This also established English as the official language of government.
