Unit 1 Flashcards
What are the three rules for contour lines?
i. contour lines never cross
ii. contour lines form closed loops
iii. space between lines shows grade of the terrain

State the three types of maps. Give an example of each.
i. general purpose map – Ex. Political, physical
ii. thematic map – Ex. Vegetation, weather pattern, etc.
iii. topographic map – Ex. Large-scale map of a provincial park
- If 1o of latitude is equal to 111 km (remember this fact for the test!). How far have you travelled if you have moved from 49oN to 47oN?
2o x 111 = 222 km
What is a Large Scale Map?
A large scale maps show a large amount of detail of a small area
What is a Small Scale Map?
A small scale maps show less detail over a larger area.
What is a direct statement scale? A line scale? A representative fraction?
i. A direct statement scale uses words to describe the relationship between distance
on a map and distance on the earth’s surface.
1 cm to 200 km
ii. A line scale is like a ruler that is divided into special units of distance (usually km)
iii. This scale is shown as a ratio of map distance to ground distance.
- It is usually written as a ratio 1 : 1 000 000 or as a fraction 1/1 000 000
Direct Statement- 1cm to 60km
direct statement- 1cm to 0.4km
Representative Fraction- 1:6 000 000
Representative Fraction- 1: 40 000
Which points on the compass rose are the cardinal points? What are the bearings, in degrees, of each of these points?
North – 0 degrees
East – 90 degrees
South – 180 degrees
West - 270 degrees
Which points on the compass rose are the ordinal points? What are the bearings, in degrees, of each of these points?
North East – 45 degrees
South East – 135 degrees
South West – 225 degrees
North West - 315 degrees
State the important lines of latitude and longitude. Draw a diagram of where they are on the Earth. (*Hint – you should know 7 lines of latitude and their degree as well as 2 lines of longitude and their degree)
North pole- 90 degrees N
Arctic circle- 66.5 degrees N
Tropic of Cancer- 23.5 degrees N
Equator- 0 degrees N
Tropic of Capricorn- 23.5 degrees S
Antarctic circle- 66.5 degrees S
South pole- 90 degrees S
Important lines of longitude:
Prime Meridian 0o, International Date Line 180o
Where is the important date line located?
It is located in Greenwich which is in London.
How many time zones are there on the Earth?
24 time zones
Each time zone is how wide?
15 degrees wide representing a change in time of one hour.
