Unit 1 Flashcards
release energy from food
mitochondria
release energy from food
chloroplast
this is where plants make their food
cell wall
holds the plant cell in shape
cell membrane
controls what oges in and out
sap vacuole
liquid inside it is a solution of sugar and other substances dissolved in water
cytoplasm
chemical reaction happens inside the cytoplasm
red blood cell
-small than other cells in the body to allow them to get through tiny blood capillaries- so can deliver oxygen to every part of the body
- the cytoplasm contains a red pigment called haemoglobin
- the cell has no nucleus to leave more space for haemoglobin
neurone
carry electrical signals from one part of the body to another
axon
very long strand of cytolpasm. electrical signals can travel along this very quickly
dendrites
short strand of cytoplasm that collect electrical signal signals from other haemoglobin cells.
ciliated cell
-have tiny threads along one edge, called cillia and can move.
- other cells lining make a sticky substance called cilia
root hair cell
-found ont he outside of the cell
-to absorb water from soil
-long, thin extension that allows water to move easily from the soi into the cell
paliside cell
-found in leaves of plants
-to make food photosynthesis
- have a lot of chloroplast contianing chlorophyll
-chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight used to help the plant make food
cell
smallest unit of living organism
tissue
a group of cells of the same type
