Unit 1 Flashcards
What role do ribosomes play in the cell?
Synthesize proteins
What does the Golgi apparatus do?
Modifies proteins and lipids received from the ER and sorts them to their final destinations.
What is the function of mitochondria
Synthesizes most of the ATP used by the cell.
What is the cytoskeleton, and what are its functions?
Hollow tubes made of tubulin. Provides cell shape, organelle arrangement, vesicle transport. Cell division and movement
What is a falsifiable hypothesis?
A hypothesis that makes testable predictions. (Is there room for error?)
What is the difference between hypothesis and prediction?
Hypothesis: If… then… because…
Prediction: If…then…
What is the biogenesis hypothesis?
States that life arises from preexisting life
What did Louis Pasteur test in 1861?
Tested the hypotheses of biogenesis and abiogenesis at the cellular level
What does the Cell Theory state?
States that all living organisms are made of one or more cells, and all cells arise from preexisting cells.
What do all cells have in common?
Have a cell membrane and DNA
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Separates the inside of the cell from the outside, defines the boundary, regulates passage of materials
Difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic?
Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus or mitochondria and are smaller than eukaryotic
What is the function of the nucleus?
Houses DNA and is the site of RNA synthesis in eukaryotic cells
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Location where proteins that will be embedded in a membrane or secreted from the cell are made
