Formal Region
an area within which most people share one or more distinctive characteristics.
Functional Region
An area where an activity has a focal point in the region and diminishes the further away from the point you go. Example, the Sacramento Bee is read primarily inside Sacramento and will be less dominant outside of the county lines.
Vernacular Region
an area that people believe exists as part of their cultural identity.
Universal Time
the time at the prime meridian (0° longitude), that is the master reference time for all points on Earth.
International Date Line
an arc that for the most part follows 180° longitude, although it deviates in several places to avoid dividing land areas.
Remote Sensing
The acquisition of data about Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting Earth or from other long-distance methods
Global Positioning System (GPS)
a system that determines the precise position of something on Earth
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
A system that captures, stores, queries, and displays the geographic data. GIS produces maps (including those in this book) that are more accurate and attractive than those drawn by hand.
Toponym
The name given to a place on Earth
Globalization
Influences that are global-wide. Can be good or bad.
Globalization of Culture
Shared common beliefs, social forms, materials.
Globalization of the Economy
Products that are sold throughout the world
Globalization of the Environment
Climate change is an example. The overall effects of our actions on the environment. Including pandemics.
Diffusion
The process by which a particular trend of activity spreads or moves across the landscape. Example, the tomato being relocated and farmed outside of its native area (South America).
Relocation Diffusion
Movement of an idea of concept to a completely different area
Expansion Diffusion
Starts in one area and slowly spreads outward.
Hierarchal Diffusion
Spreading amongst richer, more advanced groups (such as higher status)
Stimulus Diffusion
Idea adopted but not in the same manner. Example, iPhone. This was the starting idea and has been adapted to other technology.
Contagious Diffusion
Spreads rapidly throughout a group, outward.
