unit 1 Flashcards
What are protists
unicellular, more complex then bacteria or archaea
What are Fungi
Unicellular or multicellular and make their own food
What are Plantae
multicellular and make their own food
What are Animals
Multicellular and take their own food
What is the origin of multicellular life?
have specialized cells that preform different functions (digestion, waste disposal, gas exchange, protection)
Are all dependent on each other
What is Division of labor?
Cells working as a team, each cell having specific functions
What are the 3 divisions of labor
- Tissues are a group of similar cells preforming same function.
2.Organs are a group of tissues working together for a similar function
- Organ system is a group of organs working together
Why are seaweed unique in cellular function?
Seaweed is multicellular, and have i no division of labor, but they are protists
Explain fungi?
Unique structure, chemoheterotrophs and get nutrition by secreting digestive enzyme that breakdown food
What is hyphae
(body of fungi) threadlike filaments, that branch repeatedly forming an interwoven network called mycelium
What is chitin
a protein, that hyphae is made of (cell walls)
What is Lichen
combination of fungus and algae
What do fungi and bacteria do to help ecosystems?
Keep ecosystem stocked with nutrition for plants. (help dispose of carbon, nitrogen and other elements)
What can Mold destroy?
Fruit, grains, wood and human-made material
What do parasitic fungi do
Absorb nutrients from the cells of living hosts
