General in the particular
Using a particular case as a sample of a larger social issue or trend
Institutions
Long standing formal aspects of society that address basic human needs, with accepted norms, values, and statuses. Examples include healthcare, business, government, media, religion, science, family, education, justice system, and sports
Political opportunity
One of the 3 things needed for social change. A situation where there is a big enough issue (national or international) that requires a change in laws
Social change
Transformation in the beliefs, social interactions, practices, organization, and structures of society. Can occur slowly or quickly. Examples include short term changes like the response to a crisis (e.g., covid 19) and long term changes like the industrial revolution
Social position
The way society categorizes people based on characteristics
Society
A group of people who share a culture and place
Sociocultural evolution
An umbrella term for theories of cultural and social evolution, describing how cultures and societies have evolved over time. It involves the relationship between technologies, social structures, and values of society, and changes with time
Strange in the familiar
Looking at things that become invisible over time, such as computers in a classroom
Patadigmatic shift
A major societal change in concepts and practices of how something works or is accomplished, such as the shift from feudalism to capitalism. It involves a change in the fundamental concepts of society or societal expectations
Political revolution
Occur when the government is replaced or the form of government is altered, such as the French revolution or occupy movements
Social movement
Advocacy for change within a society, which may include demonstrations and activism, such as the civil rights movement
Direction of social change
Refers to whether the change is positive or negative
Rate of social change
Refers to how quickly the change occurs
Sources of social change
Refers to the factors that influence change
