unit 1 Flashcards
3 plate boundaries
convergent, divergent, transform
layers of the earth
lithosphere(crust), asthenosphere, mantle, outer/inner core
continental drift
slow movement of continents across earth’s surface
Alfred Wegener
hypothesized continental drift and got roasted
convection cell
mantle cools, grows more dense and sinks, then heats up and rises, causes plate to move
two types of converging plates
uplift: upward pushing makes mountains
subduction: denser plate goes under, makes trench
divergent plate boundaries
creates seafloor growth
mid ocean ridge, hydrothermal vents, weaker volcanoes and earthquakes
transform plate boundaries
two plates sliding past in opposite directions, makes earthquakes
volcanoes
active, dormant, or extinct
release of magma from crust
weathering
occurs when rock is exposed to air/water/chemicals
physical and chemical
environmental/ecological
environmental=people, ecological=no people
soil
forms through weathering of rocks and decomposition of organic material
younger soil has less organic matter
things that affect soil: parent material
rock that soil is made of
topography
steepness affects erosion/deposition
organisms
plants will take nutrients from the soil, animals will bury in it
