Unit 1 Flashcards
Arianism
A fourth century heresy, having it’s origins in a priest from Alexandria called Arius. Spread across the whole of the empire. The heresy is regarding the divinity of Jesus, and saying that he is all man and not divine. Constantine didn’t wan’t to have Arianism because it set the precedent that their can be multiple sources of authority(both Jesus and God)
Asceticism
The denial of physical pleasure through deprivation. Red martyrdom for salvation is no longer accessible after the Edict of Milan, so folks begin to look for a new source of it in white martyrdom. In martyrdom, monks would practice strict asceticism and self-denial, thinking it was as close as they could get to red martyrdom.
Athanasius
Bishop of Alexandria. The man under whom Constantine established the new orthodoxy. Taught that Jesus was both man and God silmataneously, eliminating idea that authority can be derived from more than one source. The Bible was carefully curated to ensure that Athanasius’ ideas were set up as the orthodoxy. Books of the bible, including the Gospels, were cherry-picked to support his thinking.
Athlete of Christ
Part of the second generation Martyrs, often a type 1 martyrdom. They showed physical strength, bravery and endurance as a show for their faith. Very gruesome deaths performing often physically impossible tasks. Ex. St. Lawrence, St. Blandina, St. Serge, St. Sanctus,
