Unit 1 Flashcards
Two main systems of building
Post and lintel
Stonehenge, the Parthenon and modern lumber are examples of
Post and lintel
Two main techniques of sculptures
Modelling or additive
The kind of colour that we generally think of as paint
Pigment
A prepared surface for the paint to adhere to
Ground
The actual material you are painting on
Support
Soaks into the material (watercolour, ink)
Stain
Coloured powder mixed with an adhesive. It really just sticks to stuff right on the surface. Can actually separate the paint from the canvas.
Power and adhesive
Wall painting on wet plaster, a very old technique
Fresco
We carve the block on the printing surface and apply ink to the high spots. Carving in the negative space and applying ink to the positive space. The things we don’t carve will actually be printed.
Relief printing
We carve the lines that will be printed. Carving the positive. Can do more detail
Engraving/intalgio
What the eye sees at a particular moment. Far more realistic
Perceptual
What the mind knows. We can tell what it is but not realistic.
Conceptual
Means warm colours such as red when we look at them they tend to feel closer compared to cool colours like blue
Chromostereopsis
They take down statues to get the debate solved. Usually if the person was connected to something bad like residential schools, they want to take the statues down
