Unit 1 Flashcards
1
Q
CNS
A
- Central Nervous System
- Includes the Brain and Spinal Cord
2
Q
PNS
A
Peripheral Nervous System
- Includes everything that extends away from the brain and spinal cord
3
Q
How Many Cranial Nerves are in the PNS
A
12
4
Q
How many Spinal Nerves in the PNS
A
31
5
Q
Ganglia
A
groups of neuron cells bodies clustered together in the PNS
6
Q
What are the Anatomical Subdivisions on the Nervous System
A
CNS and PNS
7
Q
What are the functional subdivisions on the nervous system
A
Somatic and Autonomic
8
Q
Somatic
A
- Voluntary (conscious control)
- innervated skeletal muscle
- includes both CNS and PNS
- ## Is Cholinergic (releases Acetylcholine and is therefore excitatory)
9
Q
Efferent
A
nerves outgoing
10
Q
Afferent
A
Nerves incoming
11
Q
Autonomic
A
- Involuntary (not conscious)
- Innervates glands, smooth and cardiac muscles)
- Involves both CNS and PNS
- CRANIOSACRAL
- included Sympathetic and Parasympathetic (motor nerves only)
- takes two neurons to reach target
12
Q
Parasympathetic
A
Craniosacral
- takes two efferent nerves to reach target
- Cholinergic (pre and post ganglia release acetylcholine)
- Slows HR, Brings functions back to normal everyday pace
- response is more limited but precise
13
Q
Sympathetic
A
Thoracolumbar
- takes 2 neurons to reach target
- pre ganglion releases acetylcholine but post ganglion releases norepinephrine (adrenergic)
- Speeds HR, gets body ready for “fight or flight”
- response is more general and widespread because there is more postganglionic neurons)
