Reference Maps
a map created to display information about a topic or theme
Thematic Maps
A measure of the physical space between two locations
Absolute Distance
A measure of the social, cultural, and economic relatedness or connectivity between two places
Relative Distance
used to determine where things are in relation to other things. The most important directions in geography (also called absolute directions) are North, East, South, and West
Direction
a spatial pattern that shows grouping or bunching
Clustering
a spatial pattern that appears to be distributed over a wide area
Dispersal
a spatial pattern using levels of how high or low a feature is located on the land
Elevation
a computer system for capturin, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
a system based on a wide network of artificial satellites
Satellite Navigation Systems
the process of taking pictures of the Earth’s surface from satellites to provide a greater understanding of the Earth’s geography over large distances
Remote Sensing
the extent of an area; can be in a relative and absolute sense
Space
refers to the specific human and physical characteristsics of a location
Place
a geographical term which describes the effect of distance on cultural or spatial interactions
Distance Decay
the increasign sense of connectivity that seemse to be bringing people closer together even though their distances are the same
