Unit 1 Flashcards
What is Structure?
What is how something is constructed (shape and materials)
What is Function?
What is how something works and it’s purpose for what it does?
What is the relationship between Structure and Function?
How something is constructed determines how the object will work.
If you change the structure, you don’t change the function.
False
Is a rock alive?
No a rock isn’t alive because it doesn’t contain all three elements of the PMC model.
What is the function of a leaf and how does the structure allow it to perform that function.
The function of a leaf is to allow it to gather energy through photosynthesis. The structure allows it to perform this function because the structure has leaf blades on it to gather energy from the sun and turn it into food for the plant.
What is considered “living”?
Something is considered living if it it has a program, can change food and drinks into energy, and has a cell membrane.
Is a person onion “living”?
An onion is considered living because it has a program, can turn food into energy, and has a cell membrane.
What is considered “nonliving”?
Something is considered “nonliving” if it doesn’t meet the qualifications of the “PMC model.”
How can we determine if a chicken egg is living or non living?
We can determine if it is living or nonliving because if an egg is fertilized, it is technically living, but if an egg isn’t fertilized, it isn’t considered living.
Does inside of something living count as a living object?
No, just because something is alive, doesn’t mean that everything inside of it is also alive.
What is the definition of an atom?
What is the fundamental building blocks to chemical elements?
What is the definition of an organism?
What is an individual living thing?
How are biome and ecosystem different?
A biome is similar ecosystems around the planet, but an ecosystem is all the population that affects a specific community
What is a cell?
What is the smallest unit that can carry life processes?
