Unit 1 Flashcards
Central Dogma
DNA makes RNA makes Proteins
What are proteins?
linear chains of amino acids which fold to make complex shapes capable of doing a specific task in the cell
What determines a protein’s shape and abilities?
The order of specific amino acids
What type of bond links nucleotides in a strand of DNA?
Covalent bonds
What type of bond links 2 DNA strands together?
Hydrogen bonds
What are the pyrimidine nitrogen bases?
thymine and cytosine
What are the purine nitrogen bases?
adenine and guanine
Where in the sugar of a nucleotide is the phosphate group attached?
5’ carbon
Where in the sugar of a nucleotide is the hydroxyl group attached?
3’ carbon
How are DNA strands made?
By attaching a 5’ phosphate to a 3’ hydroxyl group of another nucleotide
Amount of adenine=
amount of thymine
Amount of guanine=
amount of cytosine
