Charter of rights and freedoms

A

protects basic rights and freedoms that are essential to keeping Canada a free and democratic society

1960 Bill of Rights was passed by Parliament but Canada did not have a Constitution it could be changed by whoever was in power

1982- The Constitution Act was passed and is part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
Now Canadians Civil Rights are Guaranteed

1. Freedom of Religion- you may practice any religion in Canada without fear of persecution 2. Freedom of Expression (thought, belief and opinion) 3. Freedom of Peaceful Assembly- allows public demonstrations or striking workers to picket (destructive & 12+ ppl it’s a riot) 4. Right to a Democratic Govt- right to vote, leaders have to be re elected 5. Right to move freely between Provinces 6. Equality Rights (between gender, races etc. ) 7. Indigenous Rights 8. Official Languages (English and French)
