Unit 1 Flashcards
Cartography
The Science of making maps
Connection
Refers to how people and objects are linked across space.
Geography
The Study of where things are found on Earth’s surface for the locations
Map
A two dimensional, or flat, representation of Earth’s surface or a portion of it`
Place
A specific point on Earth, distinguishable by a particular characteristic
Region
An area of Earth distinguishable by a unique combination of features.
Scale
Generally, the relationship, between the portion of Earth being studied and Earth as a whole.
Space
The Physical gap or interval between two objects
Citizen Science
Scientific research by amateur scientists
Geographical Information Science
The development and analysis of data about Earth acquires through satellite and other electronic information technologies
Geographical Information System (GIS)
A computer system that stores, organizes, analyzes, and displays geographic data.
Geotagging
Identification and storage if a piece of information by precise latitude and longitude coordinates.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A system that determines the precise position of something on Earth through a series of satellites, tracking stations, and receivers.
Mashup
A map that overlaps data from one source on top of a map provided mapping service
Mental Map a representation of a portion of Earth’s surface based on what an
a representation of a portion of Earth’s surface based on what an individual knows about a place that contains personal impressions what is in place and where the place is located
Participatory GIS
Community-based mapping, representing local knowledge and information
Remote Sensing
The acquisition of data about Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting the planet or from other long distance methods.
Volunteered Geographical Information
Creation and dissemination of geographical data contributed voluntarily and for free by individuals.
Greenwich Mean Time
The time in zone encompassing the prime meridian, or 0 longitude
International data line
An arbitrary line approximately along the 180th meridian designated as the place where each calendar day begins
Latitude
The numbering system used to indicate the location of the meridian drawn on a globe and measuring distance north and south of the merdian
Longitude
The numbering system used to indicate the location distance of meridians drawn on a globe and measuring distance east and west of the prime merdian
Meridian
An arc drawn on a map between the north and south
Parallel
A circe drawn around the globe parallel to the equator and at right angles to the meridias
Projection
A system used to transfer locations from Earth’s surface to a flat map
Scale
Generally, the relationship between the portion of Earth being studied as a whole
