Unit 1 Flashcards
Why is it important that chemists can control the rate of reaction ?
to ensure that processes are safe for the public and do not harm the enviorment
what are the factors that effect rate ?
- increase heat
- add a catalyst
- increase surface area
- increase concentration
What is ionisation energies ?
its the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from an atom in its gaseous state
what is periodicity ?
is the word used to describe trends across the periodic table
what is the atomic number
the number of protons
what is the mass number ?
protons + neutrons
if the atom is smaller is it a greater or lower ionisation energy ?
it will be greater
what is electronegativity ?
it is a measure of an atoms attraction for electrons in a bond
if the atom is smaller is it a greater or lower ionisation energy ?
it will be greater
what can the electrochemical series be used for ?
it can be used to write ion-electron equations for oxidation and reduction reactions
what is an oxidising agent ?
it is a substance that accepts electrons
what is a reduction agent ?
its a substance that donates electrons
what can electronegativity values predict ?
weather a substance will act as an oxidising or reducing agent
