What did Garibaldi do?
He assembled an army called the red shirts, and conquered various parts of Italy in order to unify them under the mini-nation of Piedmonte.

Garibaldi’s army
Why was Piedmonte important?
Because they were one of the largest mini-nations making up Italy, and they agreed to help Garibaldi.
What did garibaldi conquer first?
Lombardy, Naples and Sicily.
What tactic was used by Garibaldi’s army?
Guerilla warfare.

The king of Piedmonte
Why did Garibaldi want to unify Italy?
Because he wanted to establish a stable democracy, and give more rights to people in the south.
Why did Vittorio Emanuele want to unify Italy?
Because he would be the leader, and have more power. He also wanted to free it from Austria’s control.
How did the Congress of Vienna lead to this?
It was the birthplace of nationalism, which was a founding principle of all unifications and revolutions.
