Unicast Flashcards
General definition
- One to one address
- Source
Global unicast
Starts with 2 or 3 - 2000::/3
- Globally routable
- Uniquely identifies an interface on the internet
3 bit : Prefix 001 (2000-3fff)
45 bit : Global routing prefix (assigned by IANA to locations)
16 bit : subnet
64 bit : interface (win random, lin mac or custom)
Unique local
Starts with fc00::/7 (fc00 - fdff)
- Because the only legitimate value for the L flag is 1, the only valid ULA addresses today are in the fd00::/8 prefix
- non routable globally
- ULA addresses are for devices that never need access to the Internet and never need to be accessible from the Internet.
- no NAT
Link-local
Starts with - fe80::/10 (fe80-febf)
- Used to communicate with neighboring nodes (same local link)
- only needs to be unique within a link
- Is always assigned (dynamically or manually)
- Routers do not forward packets with a link-local address
- only one link-local address per interface
- %11 and %en1 following the IPv6 link-local addresses are known as zone identifiers, and they are used to identify the interface on the device.
10 bit : prefix fe80
54 bit : zeros
64 bit : interface (win random, lin mac or custom)
Special addresses
Unspecified - :: - used only as a source
Loopback - ::1 - not assigned to any physical interface. One example where an unspecified address can be used is as a source address in ICMPv6 Duplicate Address Detection (DAD).
Compatibility
For interaction with IPv4
IPv4 Embedded ::ffff:192.168.10.10
