What is an adjective?

A

A word that describes a noun (a thing). E.g. The GREEN bottle. The OLD man. TEN books.

A

The repetition of the same sound at the beginning of several words in a sentence. E.g. Peter Piper picked a pack of pickled peppers.

A

A reference to a story outside of the text.
E.g. He had the strength of Zeus.
E.g. He giggled like Mickey Mouse.

A

Casual language that would not usually be used in formal conversation or writing.

A

An exaggeration that does not reflect reality.

E.g. There were millions of ants!

A

When a number of items are placed in a sentence together.
E.g. He is kind, smart and considerate.
E.g. There are a number of reasons to hate Trump: he is a racist, he is incompetent and he has stupid hair.

A

A word that sounds like the sound it describes.

What is a rhetorical question?

A

A question that does not require an answer because it has implied the answer the reader is supposed to make.
E.g. Do you really want to do that?
E.g. It is hot today, isn’t it?

What is sibilance?

A

The repetition of the ‘s’ sound several times in a sentence. The ‘s’ can be at the beginning of words or within words.
E.g. She sells sea shells by the sea shore.

A

The comparison of two different objects using the words like or as.
E.g. He was as slippery as a snake.
E.g. She was like a warm summer’s day.

A

A word that describes an action.

E.g. Hate, Walk, Believe, Be, Have

What is the effect of an adjective?

A

Adds more information about a noun.

Adjectives have CONNOTATIONS - they create feelings in the reader when the reader reads them. CONNOTATIONS can be positive or negative.

What is the effect of alliteration?

A

It makes us LOOK at certain words and emphasises them.

It can also create SOUND - we might be able to HEAR what is literally being described (e.g. ‘sharp spears soar’ sounds like a spear flying through the air).

A

Using a familiar story can help us to understand an unfamiliar situation.

A

It makes the reader feel more comfortable and helps them relate to the writer.

A

Usually helps the reader to visualise the situation more clearly by using exxageration.
E.g. ‘There were millions of ants!’ Even though there aren’t millions, it helps us to imagine just how many there are.

A

Listing makes the writer’s point more persuasive by offering multiple reasons for their view.

What is the effect of onomatopoeia?

A

The reader can literally hear the sound being described. It makes it easier for them to imagine the situation and feel like they are there.

What is the effect of punctuation?

A

Can affect the speaker’s tone. Question marks (?) show uncertainty. Exclamation marks (!) show passion, excitement or fear. Ellipses (…) show boredom, confusion or uncertainty.
