Unfamilar fieldwork Flashcards
Why is systematic sampling not always possible in a fieldwork enquiry?
animals in fields - so dangerous to cross
difficult to get to - because of dense vegetation
land may be privately owned - and part of someones garden
might be dangerous - traffic
may not be appropriate when doing questionnaires in an urban area
ways to obtain more appropriate data
larger number in groups/larger range
ask more people/do more repeats
surveys in different places/different times of year
surveys at different times of day
additional data collection techniques to find if local facilities good for older pop
inventory of existing facilities
location of existing facilities
survey of existing facilities
photographs of facilities
Why is it difficult to collect data with lots of pedestrians in street?
pedestrians moving around hard to count so miss or count people twice - results inaccurate
Group of students counting number of pedestrians et 8 locations across city centre: what students do to make results reliable?
students count at same time and for same time so don’t count same people at two locations
What data presentation is best for categorical data?
bar chart
clear visual representation
What is the geographical enquiry?
planning stage
data collection stage
data presentation
data analysis
conclusion/evaluation
Example question for rivers?
How does channel and depth vary downstream
Example question human?
to what extent have local people benefitted from Westfield, Stratford
Examples of primary data
pedestrian and traffic count
questionnaires
photographs
bipolar analysis
river survey
environmental quality survey
Examples of secondary data
Census data
Climate data
Crime stats
Google earth
Satellite images
Newspaper articles
OS maps
flood hydrograph
equipment for data collection
quadrat
anemometer (wind speed)
ranging poles and clinometer(gradient of land)
callipers(rock size)
flow meter
thermometer
tally counter
trundle wheel
Examples of data presentation for quantitative data
pie carts
bar charts
histogram
line graph
pictograms
Examples of data presentation for qualitative data
word clouds
annotated pictures
Examples for evaluation
larger sample size
more sampling points
different type of sampling
some other data that could’ve been collected may have been useful
suggesting alternative presentation to make easier to spot patterns / draw conclusions
