Underwater targeting Flashcards
what components make up FCS?
Fire control system
- Bearing
- Range
- Course
- speed
- Depth (if in submarines)
- time (only relevant to a point in time)
Why is underwater targeting usually more difficult than above water?
there is no dedicated fire control sensor
- The same sensors for long range detection must also be used for localising a target
what methods can be used to determine the range of a contact from a submarine?
Visual ranging
- periscope depth
Active Sonar
- Accurate range but immediately detected
Passive Sonar ranging
- triangulation
- Vertical direct passive ranging
- Horizontal direct passive ranging
TMA processes
what is meant by tactical offset?
Releasing a torpedo ahead of a target track
Allows torpedo time to :
- Enter the water
- Flood the battery and initiate power
- Start the engine
- Conduct manoeuvers to ensure control
what is TUA and why is it needed?
Target uncertainty area
- The area of the ocean, you believe the target is in
- elliptical as more certainty in the bearing than the range
