Short answer command words:

  • Analyse
  • Calculate
  • Compare
  • Complete
  • Convert
  • Define
  • Describe
  • Determine
A

Analyse- Break something down into it’s components, examine each part in detail. Explore relationship between features and how each one contributes to the topic
Calculate-Obtain a NUMERICAL answer, showing relevant working if the answer has a UNIT this must be INCLUDED
Compare- Looking for SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES of 2(or more) things. This answer must relate to both (or all) things mentioned in the question. The answer must include at least one SIMILARITY and DIFFERENCE
Complete- to FILL IN/write the details asked for
Convert- express a QUANTITY in ALTERNATIVE UNITS
Define- PROVE a definition of something
Describe- to give an ACCOUNT of something, statements in response need to be DEVELOPED as they are often LINKED
Determine- the answer must have an element that is QUANTITATIVE from the STIMULUS provided, or show how the answer can be reached QUANTITIVELY to gain max marks

  • Interpret
  • Justify
  • Plot
  • Predict
  • Suggest
A

Draw-produce an OUTPUT, either free hand or using a ruler
Explain- an explanation that requires a JUSTIFICATION/EXEMPLIFICATION of a point. Can be mathematical explanations. APPLYING knowledge and understanding to stimulus material
Give/Name/State- generally involves the RECAL of one or more pieces of info: used in relation to CONTEXT, it is used to determine a candidate’s grasp of the factual info presented
Identify- requires some KEY INFORMATION to be selected from a given stimulus/resources
Interpret- Recognise a TREND or PATTERNS within a given stimulus/resource
Justify- RATIONALISE a decision or action
Plot- produce, or add more detail to a graph/chart by marking point ACCURATELY
Predict- ARTICULATE an expected result
Suggest- REVIEW information then bring it together to form a JUDGEMENT conclusion following the provision of a BALANCED and REASONED argument

A

Compare= helpful phrases- however, in comparison,, both similar because, in contrast, whereas
Describe= can be A01- describe a theory, or A01+A02-define then give advice about it
Explain-can just be A02-scenario, A02+A03- give advice and then why it is good (improve, impact + justify), A01+A03- explain then strengths/weaknesses of explanation

Eg Assess how learning and biological can be used to explain human behaviour (8 marks)

  • A01= Knowledge and understanding of explanations of behaviour from both approaches
