Creates a similar worldview - closely related to ethnic understanding
Religious Understanding
connects people on beliefs and values, Effects how people see the world based on how they were taught through religion
Geographic Understanding
Connects people based on physical location barriers, causes a type of isolation from other parts of land
Spiritual Understanding
connection towards land and each other, people act on things they believe have meaning
Political Understanding
power, self determination, how they believe their nation should be run

Class Loyalties
people from certain social sector (eg. high class, wealthy)
Religious Loyalties
your religion and beliefs (eg. Muslim - no pork, believe in god)
Regional Loyalties
your location and those living there(eg. Canada)
Ideological Loyalties
how you believe society should work(eg. democracy or tyranny/dictatorship)
Cultural Loyalty
your way of life (eg. Indigenous - different dances, foods, traditions)
Ethnic Loyalty
to people of the same background as you(eg. African Americans)
When can loyalties content?
- Society - class, wealth, status, education, structure, history,
- Religion- (eg. Canada vs Quebec)
- Regional - oil, gas, land,
What are contending loyalties?
Two loyalties you have conflict making you choose what to do about it
How are Contending Loyalties Reconciled?
- Ignore it - live with it
- Choose between them - sacrifice part of identity
- Inclusion - find a way to live with both
- Change - change whatever is making them contend
- Fight - fight for change

Nation state : known as a country ( recognized from another border or government )

the love for ones country
Civic Nation
A nation who comes together based on similar beliefs and values
Ethnic Nation
A nation that comes together based on ethnicity and culture (typically born into )
What are Nationalist Loyalties
Loyalties that have to do with your nation or region
Eg. Being Canadian
What are Non Nationalist Loyalties
Loyalties that do not have to do with your individual identity - Eg. Your Sport
What is collective identity?
When a group has characteristics that everyone is a part of (eg. Canadian - everyone is from Canada)
Reconciliation
making up for a conflict that occured - accommodation
