Understanding Microbes Flashcards
What are the features of a bacteria cell?
- Flagellum for movement
- Cell wall to maintain shape
- Stand of DNA to control cell activities and replication
What are the different shapes of bacteria cells?
- Rod
- Spiral
- Spherical
- Curved rods
What is the type of asexual reproduction bacteria undergo?
Binary fission, splits into two.
Why are bacteria successful in terms of numbers?
- Can survive on wide range of different energy sources
- Can live in a wide range of habitats
- Some can make their own food
Why must bacteria be handled carefully?
They can reproduce very quickly and can rapidly spoil food and cause disease.
What is yeast?
Single cell fungus
What is yeast’s growth rate altered by?
- Change in food availability
- Change in temperature (Q10)
- Change in pH
- Removing waste products
What is different about viruses?
Not living cells, have a protein coat surrounding genetic material.
What are the conditions for reproduction of viruses?
- In other living cells (host cell)
- Only in specific cells
What is the process of virus reproduction?
1) Attach to host cell
2) Inject genetic material into cell
3) Use cell to make components of a new virus
4) Causes the host cell to split open and release the viruses
