Understanding heat and temperature Flashcards
What does temperature of an object tell us?
how hot it is
measured in degrees Celsius
does not tell us how much heat it contains
What is heat?
a form of energy
measured in Joules (J)
How are heat and temperature linked?
The hotter something is, the more heat energy it has
Energy transfer between an object and its surroundings
The difference in temperature between an object and its surroundings affects the rate at which energy is transferred. When the temperature difference is greater, the rate of energy transfer is higher.
What is a thermogram?
Image taken by an infrared camera that shows how much infrared radiation is being emitted by a body
What colour are the hottest areas on a thermogram?
White
What colour are the coldest areas on a thermogram?
Dark Blue
What is temperature a measure of?
the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance
What value is ‘absolute zero’?
-273.16 degrees Celsius
What is heat a measure of?
energy on an absolute scale
