Health and Wellbeing
the state of an individuals physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing characterised by an equilibrium in which an individual feel happy, healthy, capable and engaged.
Dynamic health and wellbeing
refers to the idea that an individuals health and wellbeing is constantly changing.
Subjective health and wellbeing
refers to how health and wellbeing means different things to different people, influenced by personal beliefs, feelings or opinion.
Physical health and wellbeing
relates to the functioning of the body and its systems
Social health and wellbeing
the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others as well as the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
Emotional health and wellbeing
the ability to recognise, understand and effectively manage and express emotional as well as the ability to display resilience
Mental health and wellbeing
refers to the state of a persons mind or brain and relates to the ability to think and process information
Spiritual health and wellbeing
can be defined as ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience of human beings..
Illness
a subjective concept related to personal experiences of a disease or injury
Disease
a physical or mental disturbance involving symptoms, dysfunctions and tissue damage
Disease

Optimal health and wellbeing
everyone being at the best possible state of health and wellbeing for them
Health Status
an individual or populations overall health taking into account life expectancy, amount of disability and disease risk factors
Self-assessed health status
an individuals own opinion about how they feel about their health, state of mind and their life in general.
Life expectancy
the number of years of life, on average, remaining to an individual at a particular age if death rates do not change
Health adjusted life expectancy (HALE)
the average length of time an individual at a specific age can expect to live in full health
Mortality
number of deaths in a population in a given periods
Mortality rate
the measure of the proportion of a population who die in a one year period
Infant mortality rate
the rate of deaths of infants before their first birthday usually expressed every 1000 live births
Under-five mortality rate
the number of deaths of children under five years of age per 1000 live births
Maternal mortality rate
the number of mothers who die as a result of pregnancy, birth or associated treatment per 100,000 women who give birth
Morbidity
ill health in an individual or ill health in a popoulation
Incidence
refers to the amount of new cases of a disease or condition in a population during a given time
Prevelance
the total number or proportion of existing cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time
Burden of disease
a measure of the impact of disease and injury, specifically is measures the gap between current health status and the ideal situation where everyone lives to old age free of disease and disability, measures in a unit called DALY
DALY (disability-adjusted life years)
one DALY is equal to one year of healthy life lost die to illness or death
YLL (years of life lost)
a measure of how many years of healthy life are lost due to premature death
YLD( years of life lost die to disability)
a measure of how many healthy years of life lost due to disease, injury or disability.
