Understanding GPE Flashcards
Week 2
What are the primary characteristics of our current stage of capitalism?
Transnational mode of production, transnational mobility of capital and the emergence of a transnational capitalist class.
How is GPE generally differentiated from IPE?
GPA = intersection of history, philosophy, economy and politics (the object of study)
IPE = the theoretical tools of inquiry.
How did GPE emerge?
One view is the socio-political and economic changes in the 1970s. Hettne’s view - the transnationalisation of pol economy compelled a reframing of theoretical frameworks to accommodate to the globalised structure.
In GPE, is either the state or economics the primary lens of inquiry?
No, as Hettne states, they continuously interact with each other thereby rendering it counterproductive to emphasising one without analysing the other.
According to Hettne, what sparks methological rethinking?
Turbulence and disability.
What will a post-Westphalian and post-hegemonic world order look like?
Interdependence due to multilateralism, the consolidation of international regimes, megamarkets, regionalisation or economic nationalism/mercantilism?
Who the fuck knows
