Understanding FORCE Flashcards
What is a line in relation to the artist?
The artist’s idea.
What two factors contribute to “power” in art?
Clarity + Meaning
What is “Directional Force”?
What three ideas does it encompass?
The direction that a FORCE is taking.
- Beginning (where you’re coming from)
- Middle (pushing your way through)
- End (where FORCE is going to)
Directs FORCE from one location in the subject through an event to another location.
What is Applied FORCE?
What happens to the directional FORCE when greater FORCE is applied?
Applied FORCE directly affects the curvature of a directional FORCE.
As you increase the Applied FORCE, the curvature of the Directional FORCE increases.
When is the energy that you are about to apply to the next directional FORCE decided?
While you are drawing the directional FORCE you are involved in at the moment.
What is FORCE?
Direction. We have energy in the body, and the direction it takes is the FORCE.
The FORCE approach is looking at the model and saying, “I want to see direction. I want to see FORCE. I want to understand how this model moves. How do I get that drama in my drawing?”
The way to do that is to see in terms of direction.
What does the phrase, “You want to go long because you want to understand the whole figure”, mean?
We want long, daring lines that capture the FORCE of the model (rather than ‘crawling’ with “little thoughts” (little lines).
You want to go long because we want to understand the whole figure.
Any time that two Directional Forces cross each other, what do we call this?
Rhythm.
It’s catching that energy from that prior location.
In what instance does can a D.F. also become an A.F.?
When it crosses over another D.F., turning itself into an Applied Force.
What is the formula for 1 Rhythm?
2 D.F. + 1 A.F. = 1 Rhythm
What does it mean to, “come in moving, leave moving”?
Every line is a result of existing FORCES at play.
Every line is an interconnected FORCE; no line starts at 0; you should be coming in at 50 MPH and leaving at 50 MPH.
