Understanding File Systems/ Formatting Flashcards
If you want to use a drive you have to
partition it, then format it
Windows file system
NTFS
MAC file system
HFS
File Allocation Table
Like an index card at the beginning of every partition that keeps track on an LBA by LBA basis where all your stuff is on that partition. Allows us to keep track of where all of our folders and files are located
FILE Allocation Table
FAT16
Format Process
Goes through and queries each LBA blocks to make sure it can read and write data, can’t fix blocks but can put an orange cone around blocks
All File Formats has a
File Allocation Table
FAT 32
32 Bit File Allocation Table, very old file system, 8 TiB volume, works on thumb drives
fragmentation
for it to scoop a bad file up it will have to run everywhere on hard drive to get it
A file system is applied to a partition by
formatting
File systems often have problems with
fragmentation
NTFS
Windows Primary file system, (New Technology File system) Windows, massive volumes up to 16 EIB
256 TIB
supports compression & encryption, folder/file security
ExFat
supports same sizes we see with NTFS, less overhead,, for using thumb drive
MFT
(Master File Table) Sits in the middle of your volume
CDFS (Compact Disk File System)
standard for all optical media, up to 4 Gib Big
