What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction?
Fiction texts are made up while Non-fiction texts are about real life.
What are the three main types of fiction texts?
Poems, plays and stories.
What does (PALL) stand for?
Purpose, audience, layout and language.
What are the most common purposes of why a text has been written?
To inform, explain, advise argue/persuade and to entertain.
What is layout?
The way a text is presented and laid out.
What are examples of layout features?
Graphs, tables, bullet points, numbered lists, columns, images, headings, font styles.
What is an inference?
A conclusion made on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
What is style?
How the whole text is written.
What is register?
The vocabulary the author uses.
What is tone?
The mood implied by the authors word choice.
What does style include?
The language, structure and layout of the text.
Examples of figurative language.
Exaggeration, alliteration, metaphors, similes, personification, onomatopoeia and imagery.
Give examples of where you might use formal style.
A job application, a school report, a letter of complaint, emails to a manager.
Give examples of where you might use informal style.
A letter to a friend, comic books, text messages and postcards.
What is the use of figurative language?
It makes texts more interesting and to create further meaning.
Give as many examples of figurative language as you can.
Exaggeration, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, metaphors, similes, imagery.
What is a metaphor?
A metaphor describes something by saying it is something else.
What is a simile?
A comparison between two things using the word “as” or “like”
What is personification?
When an animal or an object is described as having human qualities.
What are the examples of imagery?
Gustatory, tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory.
What is exaggeration also called?
Hyperbole.
What is alliteration?
When sounds repeat
What does “grotesque” mean?
For something to be ugly. (misproportioned,malformed).
