Understanding entropy changes Flashcards
in general, entropy increases in the order: (from different phases)
solid < liquid < gas
low high
becuse of the general incerase in entropy associated from solids to lquids ot gases, we would expect a system in which a gas is produced from a solid to have a ………….entropy
increased
if you increase the number of moles you have, this automatically inreases
the number of particles present
increasing the number of moles you have will increase not only the number of particles but also
the number of ways the particles can be arranged and this increases the entropy of the system, making ΔSSsystem positive
deduce whether ΔSsystem will be positive or negative for the following reaction:
2CH3COOH(l) + (NH4)2CO3(s) = 2CH3COONH4(s) + H2O(l) +CO2(g)
ΔSsystem is postitive because the number of moles of products is more than the number of moles of reactant, therefore the number of moles has increased (by 1 in this case) so the number of particles increases, so the number of ways the particles arrange themselves increases, so the entropy increases
