Q

Describe the soil preparation and planting for trees and woody shrubs

A

Timing - - October and November. However container grown can be used all year round
Site prep -
Cultivation. - Dig a hole big enough for the roots. Break up clay soils surrounding the hole..
Addition of ameliorants. - addition of lime for alkaline loving plants. Addition of Ericaceous compost for acid loving plants.
Mycorrhiza and/or fertiliser. - blood fish and bone, or mycorrhiza fungi, or a chemical slow release fertiliser can be incorporated whilst planting.
Specification - bare root (cheapest to buy or grow. Rooted liners are lifted from the nursery at the end of the season. Do not let dry out. Heel in or keep the roots damp. Plant in October/November to aid rooting out and stop plant dying of drought in the following year. Prune back top growth), root ball (bulkier and heavier), container grown (do not plant in periods of severe drought, frost, snow or exceedingly wet conditions. Increased success of transplanting. Ball must be moist when planting. Soil around the plant is firmed properly so it doesn’t become unstable. Do not introduce new weeds to the area. Can spread pests so check for signs of this)
Planting techniques (tools, depth and spacing, staking - stake before to avoid root damage, protection).
Formative pruning.
Mulching. - Well rotted, sifted compost or leaf mould mixed with good loam soil in about 1:2 parts. Use to fill the hole. Mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs to help protect against drought,
Watering. - Water whilst plant is establishing and during dry periods the year after planting.

Q

Describe the routine maintenance for trees and woody shrubs - to include pruning and the control of weeds and common pests and disease

A

Control of annual and perennial weeds
Remove suckers and water shoots
Pruning - timing - prune after flowering generally. Prune out dead, diseased, dying, damaged and crossing branches. DDDD can be done any time.
Pruning method for names Spring flowering shrub - Forsythia x intermedia ‘Lynwood’ - Prune after flowering during the period April to May. Flower on previous years growth so pruning after flowering provides maximum time for development of young growth to provide next years flowers before the end of summer. Prune of DDD and congested branches. Take out weak, spindly shoots to the pot of origin. Cut back flowered growth to strong young shoots lower down. Each year cut out up to 20% of ageing stems to near the base. Mulch and feed,
Pruning method for named summer flowering shrub - ‘ Buddleja davidii - Flowers at the end of the current seasons growth. Prune in early to mid spring to allow time for the new growth to mature and flower the same year. Cut back previous years flowering stems to within 1 or 2 buds of the older woody framework. Remove DDD and weak growth. Mulch and feed.
Pruning method for named winter stem specimen - Cornus alba - Prune in late winter (Feb) or early spring (march)before leaves begin to appear on the stems. Hard prune when dormant. Let the plant establish for a year before hard pruning. Cut back to 2 to 3 inches from the ground. Pinch out side shoots. Apply a general purpose fertiliser.

Checking protection/ties - eg temporary windbreaks. Generally remove stakes after 2 years. Tree guards must be checked to see if they’re rubbing the bark. Tree shelters should be checked to see if they’re inhibiting the growth of the tree.
Stakes
Control of aphids - encourage ladybirds to the garden. Blast with strong jet of water. Treat leaves with fatty acids.
Powdery mildew - resistant varieties. Ensure adequate airflow between plants. Don’t get leaves wet when watering. Remove infected parts of the plant. Remove dead leaves and stems.
Black spot - remove and burn infected leaves. When planting, ensure adequate air flow between plants. Remove all leaf litter. Fungicidal sprays.
Coral spot - prune off infection if possible. Good hygiene, remove dead wood and debris.
Canker - Cut away infection and treat with copper fungicide.
Honey fungus - resistant varieties. Remove infected plants. Fungicidal drench of the tree base,
