- he underclass have the same values and attitudes as everyone else in society and most of them would love to work if they have the same chance
- they feel a sense of shame that they cannot provide for their own families
- Unemployment often brings shame. Guilt, Low self esteem, insecurity and poor mental health to an individual, so many unemployed people want to go back into work in order to gain respect from their peers
