Under standing matter and energy Flashcards
Matter
is a substance that occupies space.
Chemistry
is the science of composition, structure, properties and reactions of matter
Molecules
are the smallest particle of a substance and is composed of two or more atoms.
Particle theory
All matter is made up of tiny particles
Particles have empty space between them
Particles are moving randomly at all times (even if you can’t see them!)
Particles move faster and spread apart when heat is added to them.
Particles are attracted to each other.
Pure substances
are substances that contain only one kind of matter; elements and compounds are pure substances.
Homogenous
means always the same; showing a single form or character in all occurrences.
Mixtures
are a composition of two or more substances and are capable of being separated.
Mechanical mixtures
are mixtures whose components can be seen to be heterogeneous and can be separated by mechanical means.
Heterogeneous
means varied in content; composed of different parts.
A solution
is a mixture where the components can be separated by mechanical means.
An element
is a substance composed of atoms having an identical number of protons in each nucleus.
Radioactive
substances, e.g. uranium, emit ionizing rays
radioactive waste is taken away and buried in secure caverns deep below the ground, from 500m to 1000m.
Compound
is a homogeneous substance composed of two or more elements
Solvents
are capable of dissolving another substance
Solutions
are usually made by dissolving a solute into a solvent.
