Q

what are pathophysiology mechanisms that cause unconsciousness?

A

1) reduced cerebral metabolism from inadequate delivery of blood or oxygen to brain= SUPINE POSITION
2) metabolic deficiencies that decrease the quality of blood perfusion– supine position will not help
3) direct or reflex effects on areas of CNS that regulate consciousness
4) psychic

Q

3 criteria for lack of consciousness

A

1) lack of response to stimulation (shouting or tappin)
2) loss of protective reflexes
3) inability to maintain a patent airway

Q

gastric distension?

A

a serious complecation during ventilation that causes increased risk of regurgitation and limits movement of diaphragm
**caused by overinflation of obstruction

Q

what are the 3 ways to give oxygen enriched ventilation?

A

1) demand-valve mask on portable E cylinder (doesn’t like)
2) inhalation -sedation unit
3) bag-valve-mask with attached oxygen source

16
Q

what is definitive care for vasodepressor syncope?

A
  • administer oxygen
  • monitor vital signs
  • loosen binding clothes
  • aromatic ammonia
  • moist towel on head
  • blanket
  • remove stimulus
17
Q

why is aromatic ammonia definitive for vasodepressor syncope?

A

use if still unconscious after 15 seconds… if STILL unconscious call 911 because it is not syncope

18
Q

big difference between vasodepressor syncope and postural hypotension?

A

vasodepressor syncope= young men, prodromal signs, slow return and feel bad

postural hypotension= age a big factor, infrequent prodromal signs, greater risk for injury bc they fall, rapid return to consciousness

19
Q

does aromatic ammonia make a difference for adrenal insufficiency?

A

no
